If it was not featured in a published comic book we consider it to be a "sketch" as a general category, though are certainly a variety of levels of completeness/quality for sketches; from rough sketches an artist may dash off in a minutes or two to full commissions that are every bit as complete as a page of published comic book art, and everywhere in between.
